Cannes Jury on WGA Strike: Paul Dano is an acclaimed actor from Hollywood known for his wide range of performances. He got immense recognition for his recent turn as Riddler in Matt Reeves’ gritty superhero flick, The Batman. He also starred in Steven Spielberg’s multiple Oscar-nominated The Fabelmans, as the father of a cinema-obsessed teenager. His performances in the films like There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine, Prisoners, and the Daniels’ Swiss Army Man had earlier showered him with high praise from the critics. 

Dano is a Jury member for this year’s In-Competition section at the prestigious Cannes Films Festival. Before that, he had two films in competition at Cannes. One was Palme d’Or-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s 2017 film, Okja and another one was Paolo Sorrentino’s 2015 film – Youth.

While fulfilling his commitment to the chair at the festival in France, Dano voiced his firm support for the ongoing WGA Strike in L.A. and New York. During the 2023 Cannes Films Festival press conference, he revealed that he is ready to join his wife, Zoe Kazan, on the picket line after serving his duty on the Cannes jury.

Paul Dano said, “My wife (Zoe Kazan) is currently picketing with my six-month-old strapped to her chest. I will be there on the picket line when I get home.” Despite being miles away, he conveyed solidarity with the writers.

Dano and Cazan are not just actors but fellow writers and filmmakers. Dano co-wrote the screenplay with Kazan for his directorial debut – Wildlife. Earlier, they had also collaborated to write the script of a fantasy romance – Ruby Sparks. Besides, Zoe’s grandfather is a coveted Hollywood writer-director Elia Kazan whereas her parents, Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord, are also screenwriters.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike is about a fair demand for several concerns such as – better pay, structures for residuals, and protection against AI regurgitating tools such as ChatGPT being used for work. The writers started protesting on May 2 since their earlier negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers were unsuccessful.
